Keyboard layout in 60 seconds

The piano is a repeating pattern of two black keys + three black keys. Find any group of two black keys— the white key immediately on the left is C. From there the notes go C D E F G A B, then repeat.

  • C is always to the left of the two black keys
  • F is always to the left of the three black keys
  • Octaves repeat: C3, C4 (middle C), C5 ...

Proper sitting posture

Sit near the front half of the bench. Keep your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and both feet grounded. Place forearms roughly parallel to the floor. Your elbows should be slightly in front of your body, not behind.

Hand shape and finger contact

Form a natural curve like holding a small ball. Contact the keys with your fingertips, not flat fingers. Keep the wrist neutral (not collapsed down or lifted too high).

First practice ideas

Play C–G five-finger patterns slowly, then try simple melodies such as “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. Aim for even timing and clean key changes before increasing speed.
